19the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.
20Your sun shall no more go down, nor your moon withdraw itself; for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your days of mourning shall be ended.
21Your people shall all be righteous; they shall possess the land forever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I might be glorified.
—Isaiah 60:19-21After the confession of sin in Isaiah 59, the prophet declares a command: “Arise, shine, for your light has come… Lift up your eyes and see… then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and exult.”
When we lift our eyes and behold the glory of the Lord, our hearts are filled with a deep, trembling joy that comes with holy fear and reverence before His majesty. The radiance Isaiah speaks of isn’t something we produce ourselves; it is the reflection of God’s glory upon His people. This promise ultimately points to Jesus Christ, the Light of the World (John 8:12).
Through His saving work, God brings His presence back to His people and calls us out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9). Isaiah declares that “the Lord will be your everlasting light” (Isaiah 60:20) and that His people will be made righteous by “the work of my hands, that I might be glorified” (Isaiah 60:21). Our hearts thrill with joy because of what Christ has done for us, yet we stand before Him with awe and reverence. Lux Aeterna is a reminder to lift our eyes to the everlasting light of Christ and live as reflections of His glory.
