Surpassing Worth Hoodie
8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ
—Philippians 3:8Inspired by Philippians 3:8, the Surpassing Worth Hoodie is a countercultural piece centered on a bold and confident statement: that we, as Christians, are unafraid to count everything as rubbish if it means we can gain Christ.
On the back, a hand-drawn scale presents two opposing sides: coins representing worldly wealth, fame, and success, and the cross representing a life committed to following Jesus, even if that means arduous hardship and loss of all things.
In this chapter, Paul warns believers not to place their confidence in earthly status, religious achievements, or outward credentials. He lists his own impressive background--his heritage, strict obedience to the law, and respected standing among the Jews--things that, by human standards, would be considered spiritual and social gain. Yet Paul makes a radical statement: he now counts all of it as loss for the sake of Christ. Compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Jesus, even the best accomplishments, status, and recognition the world can offer become insignificant. Paul’s point is not simply that worldly things are temporary, but that they can never give the righteousness, identity, and eternal life that come through faith in Christ alone.
Through this piece, we hope to invite believers to continually reflect on why the cross outweighs anything this world can offer, while also prompting those around us to ask an important question: Who is Jesus, and why is He worth more than everything else?
